Excellent

Summary : Most individuals using this network have been satisfied with its performance. They loved the setup, high-end encryption and great speeds. Only a handful of users have experienced issues with the speed and the ‘flashy’ software. However, if you’re looking for P2P file sharing protection, this might not be the best pick.

Infrastructure

The HMA network also operates in 189 cluster server locations and lets you access 91,100+ IP address locations. Currently, it has L2TP, OpenVPN, PPTP and SSL protocols. With zero DNS leaks and a robust 256-bit encryption, HideMyAss ensures server protection preventing personal data loss that is generally accessible to cyber hackers.

Performance

hma speed

We checked the HMA network for DNS and IP leaks and it came clean in both the tests. It is equipped with Shared and Total IP, used to view content from anywhere in the world. HMA did okay with video streaming speeds while the upload and download speed did well, if not great. A HideMyAss server located in France will give you 451 ms ping rate, 1.34 mbps download speed and 0.34 mbps upload speed. The ping rate and speed will be relatively better in locations that are physically closer to HMA’s virtual server. The VPN does not provide any bandwidth  or speed restrictions. Note that HideMyAss does not allow P2P file sharing. However, it does allow unlimited server switching.

Support

HideMyAss provides a huge FAQ section on its website, email/ help form and a Live Chat feature. Unlike other top VPN providers, HMA does not ensure prompt email reply and the chat is only available for 12 hours a day. HMA also provides device support, but only to Open Source apps. It is compatible with Linux, Mac and Windows on the PC platforms and Android, iOS and Windows mobile platforms. You can also access HMA’s proxies via cell phones, tablets, Nokia phones and DDWRT routers.

Privacy Policy

Operated by the England based Privax Limited, HMA’s Privacy Policy is relatively weak when compared to that of a top notch VPN provider like CyberGhost. Here, even though your logs and user information are protected, they might be handed over to the government or legal authorities if asked for it.

Verdict

  1. I looked at HMA but in the end it was just too much trouble to set up. And then they wouldn’t refund my payment.

  2. Simplest is really to roll your own VPN if you can
